We’re creating The Magenta to showcase the beauty of human creativity and let it shine through the increasingly muddy layers of the internet.
We’re registering as a non-profit to stay focused on creativity, not clicks or revenue. Right now we’re entirely self-funded and volunteer-run; in time we hope to bring in donations, memberships, and grants.
We’re looking for volunteer illustrators to each contribute one illustration for one of the first essays we publish on the site.
You’d be given the draft title and content of an essay to align your illustration with its theme. Across contributors, we want each illustration to be unique, while still carrying a common thread throughout.
These editorial illustrations matter a lot — they’ll shape the brand and visual identity for the magazine and community going forward. As a magazine showcasing creativity, we want them to be unique, expressive, and — most importantly — human. For that reason, we’re not looking for AI-produced content.
You’ll get prominent credit, with links to your portfolio and social profile, and you keep the copyright — we’d just have permission to publish and promote the illustration alongside its article. You’ll also be featured on our contributor page, and you’re welcome to use your profile to promote commissions, prints, or other projects.
We aim to open up grants, donations, and membership support sometime in 2026. When that funding exists, paying contributors will be our first priority, and early contributors will get first consideration for paid work. We don’t want to promise funding that isn’t there yet, so for now this is a voluntary invitation.
